Prior to Interview:
- Preparation, Preparation, Preparation
- Research the company - facts and figures, size, scope of services etc
- Create three key reasons why you think the job to which you are applying is necessary to the company's management.
- Research the interviewer - this may be possible via LinkedIn or other professional networking/social media sites.
- Create three key reasons why you are applying for the role and what you can offer
- Dress appropriately for the company. Sometimes dress code is relaxed, so ask the question beforehand
- Arrive 5 mins before interview time, and have a smile for the receptionist. Do not arrive hot or rushed as this will make you feel at a disadvantage.
During the Interview:
- Answer the questions concisely but with sufficient information - the interviewer's objective is to learn about your personal achievements. Be prepared for competency-based questions where the interviewer will ask you to give an example of an actual situation. It helps to respond in the STAR format (S - the situation/background. T - the task you were asked to perform. A - the actions your took. R - the results)
- Follow the tone of the interview without becoming too relaxed e.g putting feet on coffee table (it has been done!) or too formal. Smile and be as natural as possible to develop rapport with interviewer
- Ensure that you have had the opportunity to "do yourself justice". If you feel at the end of the interview that important information was missed, then ensure you make the interviewer aware of your capability.
